Welcome to Sukany4 - The Podcast, where we take inspiring walks with incredible individuals who are making their mark in unique ways. Today’s stroll takes us to the picturesque Ulverston Canal, the UK’s shortest canal, where I had the pleasure of chatting with the dynamic Mel Newton. Mel is the founder of MN Consulting, a seasoned marketing expert, and a passionate advocate for local business growth and community initiatives.
On this sunny May morning, we explored not just the beauty of Ulverston Canal but also Mel’s incredible projects, including the first-ever Cumbria Marketing Summit and her pivotal role in restoring the historic Roxy building.
A Scenic Start

The tranquil Ulverston Canal may be short in length, but it’s long on charm, offering stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. As we walked, Mel and I couldn’t help but marvel at the natural beauty, which perfectly set the stage for our conversation.
Mel's Journey
Mel’s story is one of passion, purpose, and perseverance. As we strolled, she shared her latest endeavours, including her work on the Roxy, an iconic Art Deco building in Ulverston.
“We’re nearing the end of the first phase of renovations, which has taken 18 months,” she explained. “The goal is to restore it to its former glory while supporting its current tenants.”
The Roxy project is more than a restoration; it’s a symbol of community spirit. Local businesses and residents have come together to preserve this historic building, a collective effort spearheaded by the Roxy Collective, a community interest company.
“The Roxy is more than just a building,” Mel said. “It’s a testament to what this community can achieve when we unite. I hope it becomes a legacy for future generations.”

Marketing for Small Businesses
Mel’s expertise in marketing spans an impressive 26 years, and her passion for helping small businesses thrive is undeniable.
“Many small businesses struggle with marketing because they lack the budget or resources,” she said. “That’s where I come in—to bridge that gap and offer affordable, accessible solutions.”
This mission is the driving force behind the Cumbria Marketing Summit, set for October 18, 2024.

Building Local Expertise
Mel’s commitment to Cumbria shines through her efforts to keep the summit rooted in local talent.
“The masterclasses will be run by Cumbrian marketers who truly understand the challenges of doing business here,” she said.
“This approach fosters trust and builds stronger relationships within our community.”
Balancing Passions
While Mel is deeply committed to her work, she also navigates a busy life balancing her dual passions for marketing and property.
“I love what I do,” she said. “But it’s a challenge to carve out downtime. My brain is always buzzing with ideas.”
Mel’s upcoming solo trip to Wales is her way of prioritizing self-care. “I’ll work a little in the mornings, but the rest of the time will be for me—walking, reading, and just recharging.”

Authenticity in Life and Work
As our walk continued, we discussed the importance of authenticity in marketing and life.
“Social media can be a double-edged sword,” Mel noted. “It’s a powerful tool, but it’s also easy to get caught up in comparisons. I always encourage clients to focus on their own journey and what makes them unique.”
A Legacy of Resilience
Mel’s resilience and determination are rooted in the strong female role models in her life.
“I come from a family of strong women,” she said. “We’ve faced challenges, but we always support each other. That foundation has shaped who I am today.”

What’s Next for Mel Newton?
With the Cumbria Marketing Summit on the horizon and plans to expand her consultancy and courses, Mel is as driven as ever.
“I love teaching and sharing what I’ve learned,” she said. “Whether it’s through workshops, masterclasses, or online courses, my goal is to support as many businesses as I can.”

The Role of Organic and Paid Social Media in Marketing
I asked Mel to explain the difference between organic and paid social media. "Organic social media is all about building your audience and trust through content creation – posting regularly and engaging with followers," she said. "Paid social, on the other hand, is when you invest in ads to get your message in front of a broader audience."

Mel noted that organic social media has become increasingly difficult due to ever-changing algorithms and the sheer volume of content online. "There’s just so much out there," she explained. "I read a statistic once that said we’re exposed to 5,000 marketing messages a day. It’s probably even more now."

Final Thoughts
Walking along the Ulverston Canal with Mel Newton was a reminder of the power of community, passion, and perseverance. Through her work with the Roxy, her dedication to local businesses, and her focus on accessible marketing solutions, Mel is truly making a difference in Cumbria.
If you’re a small business owner or simply someone who believes in the power of community, don’t miss the Cumbria Marketing Summit this October.
