A Flexible Path – Walking and Talking with Ewen Turner

Welcome back to Sukany4 - The Podcast, where we quite literally take a walk and chat with inspiring individuals along the way. Today’s episode is a story of serendipity, flexibility, and finding joy in the unexpected—a theme that perfectly reflects my guest, Ewen Turner

This episode almost didn’t happen, and here’s why:

Ewen and I had planned everything down to the last detail—the time, the date, and the meeting spot at Costa Coffee. But Cumbria had other plans. On a wet and windy July morning, both of us set off for our meeting, only to realize we’d somehow ended up at two entirely different Costa Coffees in two different towns!

After some frantic phone calls and a good laugh, we eventually found each other. Despite the weather and the initial mix-up, what followed was an inspiring conversation as we walked through the drizzle.

From Costa Coffee Confusion to Career Inspiration

Walking through the elements, Ewen shared stories of his fascinating and varied career. From working with young people at outdoor centers to writing for the world’s largest online mountain biking magazine and now facilitating with Anti-Racist Cumbria, Ewen’s path has been anything but linear.

"I think you just know if it’s not your path," I said, laughing at how his stint in traditional full-time employment lasted only nine months.

"I’ve always liked projects," Ewen explained.

"I like defined pieces of work—something with a clear beginning and end. I like being the catalyst, making things happen, and then moving on."

It’s this entrepreneurial, free-spirited energy that has driven his journey.

Early Adventures: From Outdoor Work to Mountain Biking Journalism

Ewen’s career began with his love for the outdoors, which flourished during his university days studying Natural Sciences with a focus on geography and geology. After university, his first role was at an outdoor centre, where he led climbing expeditions and helped young people build confidence through outdoor activities.

"I didn’t want a traditional job," Ewen shared. "I wanted to do something meaningful and work in nature."

But his path didn’t stop there. His curiosity led him to pursue freelance opportunities in outdoor adventure and then into journalism. Ewen began writing for a mountain biking magazine by reaching out to contacts, testing gear, and eventually landing a role as an editor.

When I asked how he broke into the field, his answer was simple:

"By bothering people."

Ewen’s time in mountain biking journalism was filled with adventures, from testing gear to interviewing professional cyclists. "It was fun," he said. "And it gave me a chance to blend my love for the outdoors with my passion for storytelling."

Facilitating Change with Anti-Racist Cumbria

In recent years, Ewen has taken his passion for people and turned it toward meaningful social change. As a freelance facilitator with Anti-Racist Cumbria, he helps foster conversations around inclusion and equity.

"The work we’re doing is necessary," he said.

"It’s about creating space for people to reflect, challenge themselves, and ultimately grow."

We talked about the impact of generational change, particularly how Gen Z brings fresh energy to anti-racism work. Their unapologetic approach to activism and self-care has reshaped conversations around equity and inclusion, often pushing older generations to confront outdated norms.

"It’s not about being perfect—it’s about progression," Ewen noted.

"We can’t force people to care, but we can guide them toward understanding that this is a journey, not a destination."

Leadership and Life in Balance

I experienced Ewen’s facilitation skills first-hand during a hike up Blencathra with Anti-Racist Cumbria. His ability to balance honesty with encouragement stood out.

"You didn’t sugarcoat it," I said, recalling the hike. "But you motivated everyone without making anyone feel overwhelmed."

"It’s about finding that balance," he explained. "Being upfront about challenges, but also guiding people through them in a way that feels achievable."

Ewen’s leadership style, shaped by years of outdoor work and facilitation, is rooted in empathy, inclusivity, and a genuine belief in people’s potential.

Music, Nature, and Purpose

Ewen also shared how music has played a significant role in his life. As a saxophonist and DJ, music offers him a creative outlet and a way to balance the demands of his work.

"Post-COVID, I’ve been reconnecting with music intentionally," he said. "I’ve even thought about busking—though I’m not quite there yet!"

His connection to the outdoors remains strong, but his focus has shifted. "I’m not chasing peaks anymore," he said. "It’s about revisiting familiar landscapes, understanding them deeply, and giving back."

A Flexible Approach to Life

As our walk came to a close, we discussed the different ways people approach life. While I’ve always been a meticulous planner, Ewen takes a more flexible path.

"I don’t have a five-year plan," he said with a smile. "I follow what excites me and see where it leads. It’s less about ticking boxes and more about eliminating what doesn’t fit."

His approach was a refreshing reminder that success doesn’t always come from rigid planning—it often comes from being open to opportunities and trusting your instincts.

When I asked what’s next for him, Ewen simply said, "I’m not sure, but that’s what makes life exciting. I’ll keep following what feels right."

Final Thoughts

Walking and talking with Ewen was a reminder of the beauty in embracing life’s twists and turns. His journey, guided by curiosity and a commitment to values-led work, shows that success isn’t always about sticking to a plan—it’s about staying true to who you are.

Ewen’s story inspires us to be flexible, to explore the paths less traveled, and to embrace the unexpected. Whether through his work with Anti-Racist Cumbria, his music, or his love for the outdoors, Ewen continues to make a meaningful impact in the world.
